Questions and Answers

What is DNA and why is it so important?

DNA is present in every cell in our body, it’s what makes you uniquely you. DNA is found inside each cell in our skin, and looks like a twisted double helix.

DNA carries or contains all the instructions that cells needs to develop, function, repair themselves, and regenerate. This is an extremely complex process. When DNA becomes damaged, the skin reflects this by showing signs of aging, lesions such as skin cancers, or other dermatological conditions.

Healthy DNA function is vital to ensure that the skin can resist the environmental stressors it is exposed to on a daily basis. Skin cells need nutrients to ensure the DNA can replicate and repair itself. This is where the intelligent skincare found in DermaDNA applies.

Through genetics, we have a DNA map for our eye color, hair color, and the shape of our nose. This applies to our skin as well. Our skin’s future from conception to birth is genetically mapped, however, there are factors that can change the outcome. You may not be able to undo your genetics, but we are discovering through science that we can effect how our skin changes over our lifetime.

Can we slow signs of aging? Can we alter the dryness of our skin? Can we reduce the possibility of acne if our parents suffered terribly? Can I avoid my skin looking like my parents’ skin looked as they aged? Can I avoid having damaged, unhealthy, dull, tired skin? These are questions that many ask, and science is now telling us that the answer to many of these questions is “yes.”

Environmental factors such as diet, behavior, lifestyle choices, and stress can change the health and outcomes of our skin’s “life.” It is a known fact that living a healthier life, protecting the skin from environmental assault such as UV exposure and destructive chemicals, reducing stress, caring for ourselves emotionally and spiritually, and eating foods that sustain and maintain healthy cellular function can induce incredible changes.

Add to this equation scientifically-proven, topical application of cosmeceuticals, and you have a solution for DNA health – changing and regenerating your skin.

What types of skin are DermaDNA products designed for?

Our active ingredients include vitamins, minerals, botanicals, and AHA’s, all of which are known to offer an array of skin-enhancing benefits.

Is it ok for my skin to be exposed to the sun?

Many practitioners recommend up to 20 minutes of sun exposure per day for Vitamin D synthesis. DermaDNA always recommends that you protect your skin from the harmful UV rays (UVA & UVB). It is always better to avoid the midday sun and best to have sun exposure during periods when the sun is less harsh. We recommend exposing a part of your body other than your face, neck, and hands, and daily use of our DermaDNA® Solar Shield..

How do I know if my skin has sun damage?

Any time your skin colors from the sun (or wind) in the form of a tan or sunburn, you have received sun damage.

Do I have to use a cleanser every day, even if I don’t wear make-up?

Cleansing is the most important part of any skincare routine. Small particles of dirt, pollutants, free radicals, and bacteria attach to our skin, breaking down the collagen and elastin, and causing irreparable damage. Using soap and water only cleans the surface and dries out your skin.

Using cleansers that are not pH balanced – such as soaps and many over the counter products – is more harmful than we realize. The skin’s barrier is broken down by these alkaline-based products and often takes up to 8 hours to repair itself from just one soap cleanse.

Our skin barrier is essential to the health of our skin. When the barrier is compromised, redness, sensitivity, irritation and other conditions appear. Cleansing with the correct and recommended cleanser is vital.

DermaDNA’s mission is to ensure you get the best care for your skin. Our suggested routine of pre-cleanse and cleansing products ensures your skin’s barrier is stable and restores the pH of your skin.

Should I exfoliate my skin?

Exfoliating is an important part of any skincare routine as cleansing only removes surface impurities. DermaDNA exfoliating products consist of AHAs (Alpha hydroxy acids) and enzymes to create change at a cellular level without stripping the skin. DermaDNA believes in the maintenance of healthy function combined with protecting the skin.

Over-exfoliating can lead to problems in and on the skin, such as redness, sensitivity, and strangely enough, increased oil production. Exfoliation is important but should not be destructive in its action. Avoid harsh physical scrubs and beads.

I have oily skin, do I still need to moisturize?

Oily skin is the result of an excess of sebum production. It is characterized by a shiny appearance, typically through the T-zone of the face (forehead, nose, chin). Lightweight serums with antioxidants and nutrients, such as DermaDNA® AC & E Hydragel, are suggested to help balance hydration levels and normalize oil production for oily skin. This helps combat bacteria and acne breakouts.

What are the long-term benefits of using DermaDNA?

DermaDNA – intelligent skincare – is science at its best. Our unique skincare formulas and combinations are proven to penetrate the DNA of your skin, activating cellular repair, restoration, rejuvenation, and regulation – all vital functions for healthy skin and the key to anti-aging.

The long-term and sustainable benefits of healthy functioning skin are glowing, radiant skin that is even in texture and color, has luminosity, and looks alive. This is completely attainable with proper skin care.

How should I care for my DermaDNA products to keep the active ingredients effective and to make them last?

To keep our products as fresh as possible, we produce small batches frequently. Our products are hand-filled and packaged for you. We have developed a proprietary preservative system that is robust yet paraben-free.

Due to our very fresh content and ingredients, our products require special handling. Many DermaDNA formulations contain photo-sensitive ingredients that are adversely affected by direct sunlight. To retain the efficacy of our ingredients, we sell all of our specialty treatment products in double barrel packaging, which is airtight and protected from light.

We also recommend the use of spatulas when handling crèmes and masques to minimize contamination.

A unique feature of DermaDNA products is the seasonal variation in the appearance. Colors may change depending on the time of year and times of harvest for many of our raw materials. As with all natural products, we recommend you keep DermaDNA products fresh by storing in a cool, dark place with stable and consistent room temperature.

Never expose DermaDNA products to extreme heat or cold as it compromises the emulsion and shelf life of the product. Typical room temperature is the ideal environment for DermaDNA products.

When cosmetics of any kind are stored at higher temperatures, the preservative system deteriorates significantly. A good rule of thumb is that a product stored at temperatures higher than 85 °F (or 30 °C) for one week is equivalent to three months of shelf life.

How do I know if I have sensitive skin?

Skin can be sensitive in many different ways, and signs can range from a mild tingling, burning sensation with slight redness, blotchiness, itchiness, to dryness, roughness, skin tightness, and flaking.

Sensitive skin reacts more quickly to environmental factors such as pollution, temperature changes (heat/cold), food (spices, alcohol), and chemicals such as household cleansers and sprays. Sensitive skin can also show signs of redness or irritation such as pricking/tingling during periods of exercise. It is vital to rebalance the skin’s pH barrier and avoid the triggers that make your skin reactive/sensitive. Looking at your skin and seeing more than one area of redness can indicate your skin is becoming sensitized before you get any other symptoms.

Barrier repair, rehydration, and restoring your skin’s nutrient levels is paramount in reducing sensitivity. DermaDNA skincare is formulated to address these symptoms and rebuild and restore the skin. Part of your daily DermaDNA skincare routine will address these issues, and we also recommend using the DermaDNA Retinol Recovery Masque.
